ASEAN will be the world manufacturing ecosystem and Malaysia needs to be part of it.
Since
Malaysia is already an influential player in the E&E industry,
which contributes to 37.4% of the national GDP, we probably have the
capacity to expand into emerging Green Technology. We have the potential
to be a leading Green Technology Producer and help countries that are
committed to the Paris Climate Agreement. This can be realised if we
utilise the potential of our national expertise in engineering.
We
should continue to strengthen our lead in Green Technology such as
Photo-voltaic (PV) System. As of 2016, Malaysia emerged as the largest
exporter of PV Modules (from SunPower Malaysia Manufacturing, etc.) to
the US, dominated with a 25% market share by value. Henceforward, ASEAN
as manufacturing hubs located at the equator will be able to benefit
from Malaysia’s innovative PV Systems (i.e., cheaper, smaller &
lossless storage) to reduce their operational expenditure in running
manufacturing businesses. For instance, supplying Thailand to power
their electric-vehicle charging networks and Vietnam to decarbonise
their heavy industries.
Therefore, more SMEs should be
encouraged to be in the manufacturing sector, especially in Green
Technology (SMEs in the manufacturing sector only make up 5.3%, whereas
90% of the SMEs are in the service sector). As an initiative, to provide
exemption as stimulation for these enterprises that will be involved in
the Green Technology industry value chain (raw material supply,
manufacturing, distribution and maintenance).
